Commercial Roofing Options: PVC

A ROOFING SYSTEM ON THE RISE

PVC is a single-ply roofing system, and is one that has taken off in recent years. In the past 10-15 years, PVC roofs have become the most popular flat roof system on the planet. There are many different reasons this system has become so popular in the current roofing market, not the least of which is cost. Let’s look at the pros and cons of this system and see if it could be a good fit for you.

Pros of PVC Roofing

As mentioned above, the largest benefit of PVC roofing is the cost. It is a relatively low-cost option when compared to almost all other roofing systems, which draws in anyone working with a tight budget or hoping to save some money.

Another major benefit is the installation process, which can best be described as quick and easy. It takes experience and practice, obviously, but an well-qualified contractor can have this system installed much faster than many other systems.

PVC systems also completely lack water permeability, which means they can resist ponding water better than systems that may have tiny holes in them. However, their ability to resist ponding water is dependent on one thing, which also happens to be the major drawback of this system: seams.

Cons of PVC Roofing

PVC is applied to a roof in rolls, and those rolls have to be adhered to one another and the roof. This creates seams, and these seams can be prone to leaking, heat loss, or pulling apart. This is a big risk of PVC systems, but they still remain very popular. In addition to the seams required in a PVC system, the sheets of material also have to be attached to the roof, generally through the use of metal fasteners. this creates another potential point of failure, and another place where the material can leak or pull off from the deck.

Conclusion

PVC roofing systems have grown in popularity over the last 15 or so years, and will most likely continue to do so thanks to pros that outweigh their cons in most people’s eyes.
