TPO is one of the newest single ply roofing materials to hit the market.
The current TPO membrane formulations are reinforced with a polyester fabric and manufactured using a UV-resistant, thermoplastic formulation. This special formulation gives them added strength, weatherability, and water-tightness as compared to other single-ply roofing systems. They are carefully crafted to be a strong contender in the single-ply roofing market.
TPO comes in several thicknesses. It is designed for use in mechanically fastened and adhered roofing applications in primarily new construction situations. TPO can be used in re-roof applications, but it is generally not as effective as other systems, such as spray foam, in re-roof situation. TPO is fire and chemical resistant and contains UV inhibitors for added longevity. The UV inhibitors lend to one of the greatest strengths of TPO, which is that they maintain their strength and integrity even after the sun beats down on them for many years.
