WHAT MAKES A GREAT ROOFING CONTRACTOR AND HOW DO YOU FIND THEM?
We all have certain results that we want to get from our commercial roofing contractor. We want to know they will do the job right, get it done quickly, and treat us fairly. It is pretty easy for us to flesh out the results that we want for our roof, but it is more difficult to choose the best contractor that will supply these results. How do we know the contractor will be honest and treat us fairly? That is a hard question to answer, but we can help ourselves out by basing the decision on the qualities of the roofer.
As we look at some qualities that are desirable in a roofing contractor, we will interject some commentary on how we feel we perform in each of these areas. The following are five areas that we feel are extremely important for a contractor to possess, but opinions vary on the subject.
Qualities of a Good Commercial Roofing Contractor
We want the roofing contractors we use to first off have an intimate knowledge of the products they work with and how they go about installing them. Knowledge is key when a contractor is quoting, planning, executing, and completing a roofing project. It is imperative that the roofing contractor chosen be knowledgeable about the materials they specialize in.
We are the largest spray foam contractor in the US, and we earned that distinction by becoming extremely knowledgeable on all things roofing. Our salesmen, project managers, foremen, and roofers are all extremely knowledgeable on not only our products, but also your existing roof, possible alternatives, and the best method for you to use.
When searching for a roofing contractor, you will no doubt want to look at their past body of work to see what they have worked on and how their projects panned out. Are they concerned with the quality of their work, or simply getting it done quickly so they can collect their check? By ensuring that the roofing contractor you are considering cares about the quality, in both form and function, of their work, you can typically ensure that they are a good roofing contractor.
Our roofs are some of the most watertight on the market. We take extra care to ensure you don’t have a leak and we don’t have to come back to fix it. On top of the quality performance of our roofs, we also strive to make our product look good on your roof. As we spray, we pay attention to what we are hitting, as well as over-spray, to make sure it looks great.
Perhaps the most important quality to look for in a roofing contractor, integrity means they do what is right by you, even if it means losing time and/or money. They have an agreement with you, and they are going to fulfill that agreement, whatever it takes. A great way to discover whether or not a roofing contractor behaves with integrity is to ask their former customers without their knowledge. Don’t pick the customers they want you to talk to, pick the ones that they don’t want you to talk to. That way, you know you are getting an unbiased opinion about the work the contractor performs.
We are a family owned and operated business, and have been that way since 1974. As such, we treat each of our customers like family. We will do everything in our power to make sure your roofing system turns out exactly how you want it, and if we struggle to meet expectations we will let you know. We can’t promise perfect results every time, but we will handle any problems with the roof the way we believe is right by you.
Another very important aspect of being a great roofing contractor is timeliness, and the percent of jobs that are completed on or ahead of schedule. If a contractor constantly misses deadlines, they will most likely also experience a lot of cost overruns, which of course you don’t want to have to pay for.
Timeliness is crucial for roofing contractors because it is indicative of the behavior and mindset of the contractor. A contractor that doesn’t mind wasting your time, giving you headaches, and charging you more money because they miss deadlines, probably doesn’t mind giving you poor a quality product and poor service along the way.
We have more crews than most roofing companies, and they are all capable of installing our product. Because we have so many crews, we finish our projects quickly and can shift crews from one job to another as time demands. We rarely fail to meet a deadline, and if we do, it’s normally due to inclement weather.
Finally, don’t forget to check that the roofing contractor in question is good at what they do. Make sure their roofs look good, and perform well, and that the contractor has the skill required to complete your project on time and in a satisfactory manner. A contractor can be the fastest, kindest, most honest person you’ve ever worked with, but if they don’t have the skillset required to work on your roof, you don’t need to waste your time considering using them.
So, there are five major qualities to look for in a roofing contractor if you’ve got a project coming up: that they are knowledgeable, perform quality work, have integrity, display timeliness, and possess the skills required to complete your project. Before you start evaluating the roofing contractors available to you, you also need to examine the type of roofing contractor you need.
Similar to the analysis of our roofing knowledge, we also have very skilled roofers on our crews as we have been working and perfecting our methods for 40 years. We build our own equipment to fit our needs and skill set perfectly, which allows our workers to be even more precise in their work.
Types of Roofing Contractors
It is extremely important that you evaluate the roofing contractors you are considering using for your commercial roofing project, but it is even more important that before you do that, you consider the different types of roofing contractors available to you. There are so many different roofing contractors out there that specialize in so many different focuses, you may find that a contractor you are considering doesn’t even work on projects that you need done. Check out the following types of roofing contractors you should be aware of.
Commercial Roofing Contractors
The first type of roofing contractor you should be aware of is commercial roofing contractors. The obvious thing to note about this type of contractor is that they aren’t residential roofing contractors. There are major differences in residential and commercial roofing contractors. Commercial roofing contractors are much larger operations, they make their money from doing large jobs and they have big crews to enable them to do those jobs. Commercial roofing contractors have typically been in the business longer than residential roofing contractors, giving them more experience and expertise.
They also tend to be more specialized in which materials they work with, whereas a residential roofing contractor may install more types of roofs. For this reason, it is important to hire the right type of commercial roofing contractor for your project.
Spray Foam Roofing Contractor
Spray Foam Roofing Contractors have extremely specialized equipment, as their roofing material, sprayed polyurethane foam, can only be applied in one way – with a spray gun. It is important to find a spray foam roofing contractor that is very skilled in their craft and that has been certified within the SPF community.
Single-Ply Roofing Contractor
Most commercial roofing contractors that work with single-ply materials work with multiple forms of single-ply. They often are capable of using PVC, TPO, EPDM, and other single-ply roofing materials, meaning they can perform a wider range of projects than a spray foam contractor.
Restoration Coatings Roofing Contractor
As with a spray foam roofing contract, contractors working with restoration coatings require specialized and expensive equipment, specialized training, and a highly skilled team to apply their materials. Typically, a roofing contractor that can work with spray foam can also work with restoration coatings because they are similarly applied and spray foam requires a coating after installation.
So we have looked at qualities of a roofing contractor you need to consider, how we display each of those qualities, and the different types of roofing contractors you need to be aware of before making a decision.
